Sts. Cornelius & Cyprian

Humility

From today’s Scripture: “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof.”—Lk 7:6

This humble statement of a Roman army officer is familiar to us: We pray it as a community at Mass just before we leave our pews to go to Communion. The centurion officer did not even consider himself worthy to speak directly to Jesus, so he told his friends what to say. Jesus respected the humility of the pagan army officer and healed the sick enslaved man from a distance.

When was the last time you showed such humility? We are privileged to pray with the same humility and to have the same level of confidence in Jesus healing us. Can you express your humility and confidence in Jesus now?

Let us pray: Lord, I am not worthy. Heal me of my pride.
