The Holy Family

Our best hope

From today’s Scripture: “Put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” —Col. 3:12

“Insanity is hereditary: you catch it from your kids.” This quote is attributed to the late American humorist Erma Bombeck (d. 1996). One of the 15 books she authored is entitled Family: The Ties That Bind—And Gag.

Today is the Feast of the Holy Family. Imitating Jesus, Mary, and Joseph is one tough act to follow! Family has been described as “Strangers who know each other intimately but have nothing in common.” But given the imperfections of the various forms “family” takes, it remains our best hope for a better 2024. Mother Teresa advised: “What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.”

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for the family for which I am part. Help me to love them as I should—and to open my heart to receive their love for me.
