Third Friday in Ordinary Time

Keep things in perspective.

From today’s Scripture: “We are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and will possess life.”—Heb 10:39

Great hardships were the order of the day in Christian community to whom the Letter to the Hebrews was written. That included being imprisoned and losing their property. This letter was written to encourage them to continue persevering in their faith despite these sufferings. It reminds us that life’s difficulties are temporary, but heaven is eternal.

Perhaps this passage will help you keep things in perspective when everything seems to be falling apart. As the saying goes, “When life gets tough, the tough get going.” The Letter to the Hebrews emphasizes much the same, encouraging the members not to retreat in times of hardship, but to find life in the practicing of their Christian faith as a community of believers.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, help me to persevere and not become short-sighted when encountering my life challenges. Like the community of the Hebrews, may I find true life in you.
