Third Saturday of Advent

Following God’s will

From today’s Scripture: “But they answered her, ‘There is no one among your relatives who has this name’. So, they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked of a tablet and wrote, ‘John is his name,’ and all were amazed.”—Lk 1:61-63

When Elizabeth gave birth to her child, it came time to name him. Her family did not approve of naming him John because it did not follow the tradition of naming children after someone in the family. So, they went over her head and asked Zechariah, her husband, to override his wife’s decision. Of course, he did not. Family traditions can be valuable. But not always. When in doubt, we need to ask God. God’s will always trumps our traditions.

Let us pray: Whenever I make decisions, help me always to ask what You want first.
