Third Tuesday of Advent

Remove my blindness

From today’s Scripture: “Then Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.’ And the angel said to him in reply, ‘I am Gabriel, who stand before God. I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news. But now you will be speechless and unable to talk until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.’”—Lk 1:18-20

The pain of couples or individuals who want to get pregnant, and cannot, is intense, but ignored and often not understood by society. A relative of mine, who was a successful Marine and business woman, shared with me that she shopped for groceries only between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, lest she meet a woman in the store with a child. And, she avoided family gatherings for the same reason. She felt isolated and excluded by society because she couldn’t bear a child.

Let us pray: Father, remove my blindness to the exclusion from Church or society that some of my brothers and sisters feel, and give me the wisdom to open doors.
