The key to humility

From today’s Scripture: “The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” —Mt 23:12
Many of the qualities God loves take time, effort, and hard work to cultivate in our lives. Humility is one of these. The culture of the world tells us to look out for our own interest, to put ourselves first, and that personal success equals happiness. But the Kingdom of God calls us to a higher reality.
The key to humility is understanding our identity as beloved children of God. We have to fully grasp that our value and our identity comes only from God, and from nothing else. His love never wavers, never changes. When our identity comes from the Heavenly King himself, and we see ourselves as royal sons and daughters, we become truly free. We no longer need the world to recognize or praise us, because we already hold the gaze of the one who matters the most.
Let us pray: Lord, help me to grow in humility. Help me to be confidently and securely aware that my identity is found and defined by you alone.
